und die Geschichte dazu ! LOL!!!
Wie wir alle wissen stimmt diese Geschichte heute nicht
mehr , aber im Rückblick doch lustig ! in english , weil
an sie SEPS USA gerichtet.
The story of the 'Ticino700' :
My friend Arndt Pergande found some years ago in the mountains near
Lugano at 700 m elevation chance seedlings spread by birds over some
hundreds of meters. In the near is a garbage dump of common garden waste.
There the birds pick up the Trachy seeds.
In the region of Locarno and Lugano in the Tessin ( italian : Ticino ),
Schweiz , there are thousands of trachies since 120 years and grow nearly
in the wild.We think the trachies there to be more or less hybrids between
T. fortunei and T. takil . Beccari was probably the first to introduce
T.takil
(from Mount Takil in Kumaon at a height of 6600-8000 feet) in Europe. He
obtained some plants from seeds in 1887 .The trees were kept in the open
in the vicinity of Florence and they did not suffer even during the
severest
of winters. In April 1902 the first takils produced flowers.
From that time on we have open pollination in North Italy and Schweiz
with the Trachies. Compare the Hastulas and you can see the Ticinos are
between fortunei and takil. The socalled 'Ticinos' are more or less
coldhardy
and have a potential in coldhardiness as shown by the 'Gauss's
distribution.
Today we think the chance seedlings found by my friend at 700 m elevation
to
be more cold hardy because they are preselected in that height.
More than 100 seedlings came to Germany to the town' Koeln'. There they
suffer in the 96/97winter severe cold damage at - 24 °C or - 11,2°F on
Sylvesternight and 10 more nights between -15°C and -20°C 5°F and -4°F.
The winners we called Trachycarpus aff. fortunei 'Ticino700'. They came
through 96/97 with little leaf burn at the outer leaves.
Now it is your turn to tell me the Taylor's story.
Take care
Jost

PS. The phaenotypic signs of the 'Ticinos 700' : the leaves are very thin
with a pergament shape ; touch it ! the petioles are long and
in Germany they flower very late .
